Biometrics and biometrics

Today, the word biometrics and its derivatives, are heard frequently. It is possible that someone eventually talk about technology mentioning things like biometrics, biometrics, and of course biometrics.

To begin to uncover what these words mean, the first thing is to start with the simplest. According to the dictionary of the RAE, biometrics is "measurand or statistical study of phenomena or biological processes." Maybe the thing this definition is not entirely clear, so look to biometrics, which are personal characteristics or behavioral-physiological and intrinsic character-such as fingerprints, eye patterns, voice, veins The way you walk, how to type or how to write.

All the qualities mentioned above, serve to establish the identity of a person effectively. Examples are fingerprints, which have been used for this purpose for hundreds of years.

For a biometric indicator, be considered as such, must meet certain requirements. The first one is related to universality, which means that a biometric indicator must be present in all people. The qualities that were mentioned above, are characteristic of all human beings and are present in every one of them, with few exceptions. As a second requirement is the uniqueness, which states that there should be two individuals have the same qualities. An example of this are the fingerprints because no two people with the same fingerprint pattern, like the iris with the retina, and so on.

The third requirement relates to the stability, which says that a biometric indicator should be robust over time, disease and other conditions. As a fourth requirement is the facility, which refers to the simplicity with which a biometric indicator should be taken. A fingerprint is very easy to take, as iris patterns or facial features.

As biometric systems, they must have a capture mechanism and a computer. With the capture mechanism includes a biometric indicator and the computer's mission is to compare it to a database, for purposes of verification or authentication.

Verification is used to verify that a person is who they say they like at a police checkpoint. Authentication is done to see if a person has already been registered in the system and determine if you can access a particular location, such as access control.
