Born to Heal His Brothers

As authorized by law on bioethics in France since 2004, parents of the child, whose previous children have a blood disease, beta-thalassemia, they decided to conceive a child genetically compatible with their siblings. To do this, they turned to in vitro fertilization, which underwent a dual diagnosis before having to make sure that the embryo was healthy and compatible with one of their sick children.

Thus, doctors have been able to ensure that the unborn child was not the same disease that had older siblings and it was a compatible donor with him or his siblings would be treated to cure them. At birth, the umbilical cord blood Umut-Talha joined with his mother, rich in stem cells, was recovered. These stem cells that give rise to blood cells, will be retained for a subsequent transplant for his brother or sister.

This practice, first performed in France, it is still rare in the world. In Gaul, is subject to approval by the agency of biomedicine, which delivers the authorizations after reviewing each case.

In 2008 in Spain, was the first birth of a baby born to save his brother. The blood from his umbilical cord allowed to cure his brother suffering from a severe form of congenital anemia.
